Do this now: which line to call
Take these 3 steps in order, safety first.
- Gas smell, sparks, smoke, or a tree or wire down: get everyone out and call 911 or the gas or electric utility from outside before anything else.
- Water spreading from a pipe, a roof or a ceiling: shut the main water valve, move what you can, and photograph the damage before anything is moved or thrown out.
- Then call the line for the job: the water damage line for water damage restoration, the electrician line for electrical work, the garage door line for garage door repair and the tree service line for tree removal. Each goes to an independent company that serves your area and takes that job. The plumber line is for leaks, clogs and water heaters.
Is it an emergency? What can wait
3 things are emergencies before they are repair jobs: a gas smell, sparks or smoke, and a downed power line; call 911 or the utility for those.
- Water damage and mold: water still spreading is urgent, so stop the source first. Call your insurer, photograph first, and never sign over a claim to a contractor.
- Electrical: sparks, smoke, a burning smell or a hot panel means leave and call 911. A whole-house outage goes to the utility first; one dead circuit can wait for a booked visit.
- Garage door: a broken spring or a door off its track can wait for a booked visit if the door is closed. Do not try to lift or force it.
- Tree removal: a tree on the house or across a wire is urgent. Stay clear of any tree touching a power line and call the utility; a dead or leaning tree can usually be booked for a daytime visit.
Water damage restoration in Salt Lake City: what it costs
Water damage restoration costs $1,383 to $6,369 for most jobs, with a $3,868 average, HomeAdvisor reported in 2026; we found no Salt Lake City price, so that is a national figure. If sewage is coming up from the city side, call Public Utilities' 24-hour line, 801-483-6700; the city's sewer plan says a property owner must notify it immediately of a backup. The same plan says the city does not pay for losses caused by a break, leak, backup or failure of private facilities, such as your own lateral. The EPA says wet materials dried within 24 to 48 hours in most cases do not grow mold. Call your insurer too, photograph the damage before anything is moved or thrown out, and do not sign an assignment of benefits or any contract that hands your claim to a contractor. Water on the floor, a wet ceiling or a musty smell? Call the water damage line now. Drying in the first 24 to 48 hours is what keeps mold out.
Mold removal in Salt Lake City: who regulates it
Mold removal costs $1,500 to $9,000 for most jobs, Fixr reports, and This Old House puts the average at $2,300. Utah has no state mold law, according to the Environmental Law Institute's 2024 compilation, and the Salt Lake County Health Department says it cannot respond to housing complaints about mold unless the mold comes from an active water leak the occupant did not cause. The EPA says a homeowner can generally clean an area under about 10 square feet; larger areas call for professional remediation. The CDC does not recommend mold testing, and the EPA says sampling is in most cases unnecessary when mold is visible. Stop the moisture first and dry wet materials within 24 to 48 hours. If the mold follows a sudden leak or a sewer backup, photograph it and call your insurer before cleanup. See mold remediation and mold inspection.

Electrician in Salt Lake City: costs and DOPL licenses
An electrician visit costs $163 to $538 for most jobs, with a $351 average, Angi reported in August 2026, a national figure. Utah licenses electrical contractors (E200 general or E201 residential) and master and journeyman electricians through DOPL, and the same DOPL lookup confirms a license. Salt Lake City requires a permit before any installation or alteration to a building's electrical system. For an outage or a downed wire, call Rocky Mountain Power at 1-877-508-5088 and never touch or go near a downed line. Sparks, smoke or a burning smell: leave and call 911. Electrical jobs go to the electrician line on electrical repair; see also emergency electrician and electrician license by state.
Power out, a breaker that will not reset, or an outlet that is warm or dead? Call the electrician line. A local electrician answers and quotes the service call first.
Garage door repair in Salt Lake City: costs and safety
Garage door repair costs $155 to $379 for most jobs, with a $265 national average, HomeAdvisor reported in June 2026, and a spring runs $180 to $350. HomeAdvisor says springs hold hundreds of pounds of tension, so leave them to a pro. CPSC says to test the opener's reversing feature every 30 days with a 2x4 laid flat in the door's path, and to disengage the opener until it is fixed if the door does not reverse. We found no Salt Lake City rule specific to garage doors, so ask the company whether your job needs a permit. Garage door calls go to the garage door line on garage door repair; spring jobs are covered in garage door spring repair.
Door stuck, spring broken or opener dead? Call the garage door line. Leave a door with a broken spring closed.
Tree removal in Salt Lake City: park strip permits
Tree removal costs about $750 on average nationally, with most jobs $200 to $2,000 or more, Angi reported in July 2026. In Salt Lake City, a permit is required before removing, pruning or planting any tree in the public right-of-way, including the park strip, and the city issues those permits only to arborists certified by the International Society of Arboriculture. The city counts about 63,000 street trees; call Urban Forestry at (801) 972-7818 to confirm whether a tree is public before anyone cuts. A tree on a power line: stay away and call Rocky Mountain Power, 1-877-508-5088. Tree jobs go to the tree service line on tree removal; see also tree trimming.
Tree dead, leaning or down? Call the tree service line. Stay away from any tree touching a power line.
