Definition

AC installation in San Diego is replacing or adding a central air conditioner or heat pump, including the permit and any required testing. ConsumerAffairs puts a full San Diego system at $7,000 to $18,000 (April 2026).

What to do right now if the old AC just died

  1. Get a repair diagnosis before you buy. ConsumerAffairs puts the San Diego diagnostic fee at $100 to $250.
  2. Ask the age of the unit and the refrigerant type. HomeGuide suggests replacing a system over 10 years old or one that uses R-22.
  3. During a County Heat Warning, use a Cool Zone (1-800-339-4661, weekdays) while you get quotes.
  4. If the repair is small, see AC repair in San Diego instead.

Is it time to replace? Signs a repair is not worth it

Replace when a repair would cost half the price of a new system, when the unit is over 10 years old and needs frequent repairs, or when repair cost times age in years tops $5,000, HomeGuide says. HomeGuide puts AC life at 12 to 15 years with maintenance; HomeAdvisor says 15 to 20.

AC or heat pump for a San Diego home

San Diego needs about as much heating as cooling. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Lindbergh Field show 893 cooling degree days and 990 heating degree days a year, with only 3.0 days at or above 90 F. A heat pump does both jobs with one outdoor unit; CSLB says the C-20 class covers HVAC heat pumps. HomeGuide puts an air-source heat pump at $10,000 to $25,000 or more nationally. Compare on heat pump installation cost, and for rooms without ducts see mini split installation.

San Diego AC installation permit and HERS test

The City's Simple No-Plan Mechanical Permit covers installing forced air units or air conditioner units and replacing furnaces in single-family homes, townhomes and duplexes. Homeowners, property owners and licensed contractors can obtain it, and the City says there are no exemptions. The California Energy Commission says properly permitted work triggers any required HERS testing, HERS documentation is needed to close the permit, and field verification moved into Title 24 Part 6 on January 1, 2026. A contractor who offers to skip the permit is skipping the test too.

Efficiency rules for California installs

DOE's 2023 standards put California in the Southwest region, where a split AC under 45,000 Btu/h must meet 14.3 SEER2 plus an EER2 requirement, enforced by installation date. Split heat pumps must meet 14.3 SEER2 nationwide. HomeGuide's 2025 prices rise with efficiency: $5,300 to $7,900 installed up to 13.4 SEER2, and $7,500 to $10,600 for 15.0 to 17.2 SEER2.

Rebates and credits for a San Diego system in 2026

Most incentives are gone for 2026 installs. TECH Clean California's single-family heat pump incentives have been fully reserved since November 14, 2025, and California's HEEHRA single-family rebates were fully reserved as of February 24, 2026. The IRS says the federal 25C credit covered improvements through December 31, 2025. SDG&E's Energy Savings Assistance program covers room AC replacement and portable AC for qualifying households, but central AC is not on its list.
