Definition

AC installation in Phoenix is replacing or adding a central air conditioner or heat pump, including the outdoor unit, indoor coil and connections. Angi's August 2026 Phoenix guide puts the average at $6,892.

What size AC does a Phoenix home need, and what does it cost?

A 3 to 5 ton AC costs $3,500 to $9,000 in Phoenix, by tonnage, in Angi's August 2026 Phoenix guide. By home size, Angi lists $3,000 to $7,000 for 1,500 sq ft, $3,500 to $8,000 for 2,000 sq ft and $4,000 to $9,000 for 2,500 sq ft. Size should come from a load calculation, not the old unit's label; ask the installer to show it.

Efficiency rules for a new AC in Arizona

A new split AC installed in Arizona must meet the federal Southwest standard: 14.3 SEER2 for units under 45,000 Btu per hour, plus an EER2 minimum of 11.7, or 9.8 if the unit is rated 15.2 SEER2 or higher, the DOE's 2023 standards FAQ says. The EER2 limit is the Southwest region's extra rule, and Sky Harbor averages 111.3 days a year at 100 F or above under NOAA's normals. Split heat pumps must meet 14.3 SEER2 nationwide.

SRP and APS rebates on a new AC in 2026

SRP pays $75 a ton for single-stage, $150 a ton for multi-stage and $225 a ton for variable-capacity ACs or heat pumps, up to $1,125, for systems at 15.2 SEER2 or better. A contractor licensed in Arizona must install it before April 30, 2027, and the rebate must be submitted within six months. APS says its AC rebate is no longer available as of January 1, 2026. Southwest Gas's 2026 Arizona form has no furnace rebate, and the IRS says the federal 25C credit does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Phoenix owners who qualify by income can get cooling equipment repaired or replaced through the City's Weatherization Assistance Program, which is free and grant-funded (income limit $31,920 for one person, up to $77,360 for five). Call 602-534-4444.

Do you need a permit for a new AC in Phoenix?

A same-size AC swap in Phoenix can be permit-exempt, but only if every answer on the City's screening list is no. The City's counter guideline, approved May 4, 2020, asks whether the new unit sits in a different location, has a different footprint or more weight, changes duct openings or ductwork, is a different type, holds 10 pounds or more of refrigerant (over 5 tons), adds gas heating demand, or draws more amps or needs new wiring. "If any answer is 'yes', a permit is required." Angi puts the permit fee at $150 for the first $1,000 plus $9 for each additional $1,000. PDD: (602) 262-7811.

When to replace a Phoenix AC

Replace a Phoenix AC in spring or fall if you can, because Angi's Phoenix guide says heat waves limit contractor availability and drive up rates. HomeGuide puts AC life at 12 to 15 years with maintenance, and HomeAdvisor suggests replacing a system over 10 years old that needs frequent repairs or uses R-22. A unit that fails in July may need a fast repair to get through the summer; see emergency AC repair in Phoenix.

What to ask a Phoenix AC installer

  1. What is your ROC license number, and is it R-39 or CR-39?
  2. Can I see the load calculation for my house?
  3. Does this unit meet the Southwest SEER2 and EER2 minimums, and which SRP tier does it reach?
  4. Will the swap pass the City's screening list, or will you pull a permit?
  5. What does the price include: coil, line set, pad, thermostat, removal of the old unit?
