Do this now: water pouring out in a Miami home

  1. Smell gas? Leave the house, then call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Peoples Gas says not to look for the leak and to avoid anything that could make a spark.
  2. Water near outlets, cords or appliances: stay out of it. The Red Cross warns not to touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.
  3. Shut the main water valve and open a faucet to drain the lines.
  4. Break at the meter or in the street? That is the county's side. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer maintains service up to and including the meter box; call its 24-hour line, 305-274-9272.
  5. Photograph the damage before cleanup, as FEMA advises, then call your insurer. Do not sign an assignment of benefits: Florida bans them on policies issued on or after January 1, 2023.
  6. Call the plumber line and ask for the after-hours rate before anyone is sent.
Definition

An emergency plumber in Miami is a Florida-licensed plumbing contractor that takes after-hours calls for burst pipes, sewage backups and leaks that cannot be stopped. Angi's 2026 national range is $100 to $500 an hour.

Is it an emergency? What to call about tonight in Miami

Call tonight for a burst pipe, a sewage backup, a gas smell or a leak you cannot stop at a valve; Angi puts holiday rates as high as $600 an hour, so a drip that can wait until morning should.

  • Call now: water spraying or running that the main valve will not stop, sewage rising in a tub or shower, a water heater leaking from the tank, the only toilet fully clogged.
  • Call WASD instead: a broken county main, a leaking meter or hydrant, or an overflowing manhole, at 305-274-9272.
  • Can wait: a dripping faucet, a running toilet or one slow drain.

24 hour plumber in Miami: who answers at night

Miami-Dade Water and Sewer's call center answers 24 hours a day at 305-274-9272, but only for the public system: broken or leaking county water or sewer pipes, hydrants, manholes and meters, and backed-up sewer lines. The county says it is unable to perform repairs on private property, so anything past the meter box needs a plumber, including a leak under the slab or behind a wall. Companies that take emergency calls set their own hours. Ask when you call whether they can come tonight, what the trip fee is and what the hourly rate is after midnight. The national emergency plumber guide explains how after-hours pricing works.

After the emergency: permits and the WASD leak credit

Most emergency fixes can start right away, because licensed plumbing repairs under $2,500 need no City of Miami permit. Larger jobs, like re-piping or replacing the water service line, go through the city's Easy Permit.

If the leak was hidden underground or inside a wall, WASD may adjust the bill, but only if the repair is done within 30 days of the department's notice. It asks for repair receipts or a letter from the plumber plus before-and-after photos, so take pictures before the wall is closed and ask for an itemized receipt. The full rules are on plumber in Miami.

A cracked toilet or old fixture? Miami-Dade rebates

If the emergency ends with new fixtures, Miami-Dade's water conservation rebate for single-family homes built before 1996 pays up to $50 per WaterSense toilet, $25 per showerhead and $25 per faucet, two of each per property. Seniors with a senior tax exemption can get up to $200 for one toilet or $300 for two when a Florida-licensed contractor installs them.
