Attic Fan Installation Cost: $369 to $914 + Solar (2026)
Attic fan installation costs $626 on average in HomeAdvisor's 2026 data, typically $369 to $914; a solar attic fan runs $300 to $1,000 installed.
A whole house fan costs $900 to $2,600 (Fixr, 2026) and a ridge vent $300 to $650 (Angi, 2026). The DOE's Building America program generally recommends passive venting over powered attic fans, which can pull cooled air out of the house.

Attic fan cost by type
| Type | HomeAdvisor (June 2026) | HomeGuide (Apr 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Passive vent | $75 to $100 | Static vent $200 to $700 |
| Electric, roof-mounted | $100 to $450 | $200 to $1,200 |
| Electric, gable | $100 to $450 | $200 to $1,000 |
| Solar | $300 to $1,000 | Roof $300 to $1,400; gable $350 to $1,200 |
| Dual-power (solar and electric) | $300 to $1,000 | Not listed |
| Roof turbine | $100 to $150 | $150 to $300 |
Installed price per fan.
Roof-mounted fans need a hole cut in the roof and flashed, which is roofer work at $45 to $85 an hour in HomeAdvisor's figures (Angi lists $45 to $75 for roof and ridge fans). Gable fans mount in the gable wall instead of the roof. An electric fan needs power: HomeAdvisor lists electricians at $65 to $85 an hour with at least an hour of wiring, and HomeGuide prices a new line to the attic at $7 to $10 per linear foot. A thermostat runs $150 to $400 and a humidistat $50 to $100. Wiring work should be done by a licensed electrician; the electrician license by state page lists the rules, and roof cuts fall under roofing licenses in some states.
Do attic fans help or hurt
Federal building research is skeptical of powered attic fans. The Department of Energy's Building America Solution Center says passive attic ventilation is generally recommended over attic ventilation fans, and that ENERGY STAR does not recommend them. Its reasons:
- They pull conditioned air out of the house. The fan lowers the pressure in the attic, which draws cooled air up through gaps in the ceiling.
- They can backdraft combustion appliances. Appliances that are not sealed-combustion may backdraft. Building America says not to use attic fans with combustion equipment in the attic.
- They can draw in garage air and radon. Air pulled from the living space can be replaced by air from the garage. See radon mitigation if a test came back high.
- The savings are small or negative. Building America cites Florida Solar Energy Center studies finding fans can use more electricity than they save in air conditioning. FSEC measured conventional attic fans drawing 250 to 300 watts.
HomeGuide reaches the same practical answer: in a poorly sealed attic a fan can pull conditioned air out and raise energy costs, and a well-insulated home with enough passive ventilation usually does not need one. Building America's fixes for a hot attic are more insulation, air sealing the ceiling, sealing and insulating ducts in the attic, better passive vents, and a radiant barrier or cool roof. Attic insulation cost prices that work.
Solar powered attic fan: worth it?
Solar fans run off their own panel instead of house electricity. Building America says solar or low-CFM fans produce less negative pressure, and Georgia's energy code does not allow attic fans unless they are solar powered. The gains are modest. In a 2000 FSEC report on one test house, two solar attic fans cut air conditioning energy about 6%, worth roughly $37 a year, and at about $850 installed the payback ran past 20 years. The authors called the effect "fairly modest with well insulated attics." HomeAdvisor's 2026 price for a solar attic fan is $300 to $1,000 installed. If you already have solar panels on the roof, tell the installer where the arrays sit before anyone cuts a fan opening.
Attic fan repair cost
HomeGuide puts attic fan repair at $100 to $500. A belt or switch runs $60 to $100 and a motor $150 to $650. Electric and solar fans last 10 to 15 years in HomeGuide's figures, and it advises replacing the whole fan once it is past 10 years old. Passive roof vents last 40 to 50 years. HomeGuide also says a well-insulated home with enough passive ventilation typically does not need a fan, so ask whether a failed one needs replacing at all.
Whole house fan installation cost
A whole house fan is a different machine. The DOE describes it as pulling outdoor air in through open windows and exhausting it through the attic. Fixr's January 2026 range is $900 to $2,600, typically about $1,700; HomeGuide puts it at $600 to $2,300.
| Job | Fixr (Jan 2026) |
|---|---|
| 1,500 sq ft home, 6,000 CFM | $700 to $2,300 |
| 2,000 sq ft home, 8,000 CFM | $800 to $2,400 |
| 3,000 sq ft home, 12,000 CFM | $1,000 to $2,600 |
| Direct-mounted fan | $1,400 to $2,000 |
| Ducted fan | $1,800 to $2,400 |
| Added vents or louvers | $300 to $650 |
Installed prices.
Running one is cheap: Fixr lists 120 to 600 watts, or $0.16 to $0.88 per day when run at night only. The DOE's guidance on where it works:
- Cool nights. Whole house fans are most effective when it is cooler outside than inside.
- Not for humid air. They do not dehumidify, so the DOE calls them less suitable for high-humidity climates.
- More attic vent area. The attic needs 2 to 4 times its normal vent area, about 1 square foot of net free area per 750 CFM of fan.
- Open windows first. Running the fan with windows shut can backdraft gas appliances, which is a carbon monoxide risk.
- Cover it in winter. Use an airtight cover when it is off for the season.
Attic fan vs whole house fan
An attic fan only moves attic air. A whole house fan moves air through the whole house and only runs with windows open; the DOE says it is most effective when it is cooler outside than inside. Building America's list of fixes for a hot attic starts with insulation and air sealing, not fans.
Thinking about a whole house fan? Call the attic line with the home's square footage and whether the attic has room for the added vents.
Ridge vent installation and roof ventilation
Most attics are vented without a fan: air comes in low at the soffits and leaves high at a ridge vent or roof vents. Angi puts ridge vent installation at $300 to $650, an average of $500, and says labor may be lower as part of a reroof. Fixr's roof vent range is $240 to $600 for a ridge vent, with a permit around $75.
| Vent | Angi (Sept 2026) | Fixr (Jan 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge vent | $300 to $650 (average $500) | $240 to $600 |
| Soffit vent | $315 to $465 | $290 to $475 |
| Roof turbine | $65 to $250 | $65 to $250 |
| Box vent | About $500 per unit | $55 to $200 (turtle or box) |
| Gable vent | $60 to $150 per unit | $70 to $330 |
Installed prices.
Angi says most pros recommend at least 1 square foot of ventilation per 150 square feet of attic, with exhaust vents high and intake vents low. Building America adds that insulation must not block the soffit vents: keep at least 1 inch between insulation and the roof sheathing, using baffles. HomeGuide also says attic fans are not recommended with ridge vents. If you are planning a new roof, Angi says ridge vent labor may be lower as part of the reroof. A vent that leaks is a roof leak repair; Fixr puts vent leak repair at $400 to $1,000.
Who installs attic fans and vents
- Roof fans and ridge vents: a roofer, because the job cuts and flashes the roof. Ask how they will seal the opening and whether a permit is pulled.
- New wiring: an electrician, for the circuit and any thermostat. Ask for the linear-foot price for the run to the attic.
- Whole house fans: ask whether the quote includes any added attic vents and an airtight cover for winter.
- Ask about combustion appliances. If a gas furnace or water heater sits in the attic, ask how the installer will avoid backdrafting.
Attic work is ladder work, and a 2017 CDC NIOSH blog counted more than 500,000 people treated and about 300 deaths a year from ladder injuries. Calls go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job. How calls work.
