Do this now: a tree on the house or a power line

  1. A tree on a power line or a wire on the ground: leave the area and call 911. Oncor says the 911 operator will contact Oncor directly; never approach, touch or move a downed line.
  2. If anyone is hurt, or the house is no longer safe (a crushed roof, a gas smell, sparking), get everyone out and call 911.
  3. Call your insurer before you hire anyone, because a tree on the house may be a claim. Photograph the tree, the roof and the yard before anything is moved, and make only the repairs needed to stop more damage (Maryland Insurance Administration).
  4. Do not climb onto the roof or cut a bent limb yourself. ISA warns that broken limbs and uprooted trees under tension can move unexpectedly when cut.
Definition

Tree removal in Dallas is cutting a tree down and hauling it away, $400 to $1,200 for most trees by HomeGuide's 2026 national range; Dallas requires no permit on a lot under 2 acres with an existing house, but parkway trees are city property.

Is it an emergency? Signs a Dallas tree needs help today

A tree needs attention the same day when its lean passes 15 degrees or suddenly changes, the trunk has deep cracks, soil is cracking or lifting at the roots, or a broken limb hangs over the house, a driveway or a wire (HomeGuide and ISA warning signs). Report a fallen or hazardous tree lying in the street to 311 or Public Works at (214) 670-4491, and call 911 for any life-safety emergency, the Dallas tree manual says. A tree down in a creek goes to 311 or Dallas Water Utilities at (214) 670-0161.

Same-day or next-day service often costs 2 to 3 times the standard rate, HomeGuide says, and Angi puts emergency removal as high as $5,000. A dead branch over open lawn, or a healthy tree you simply want gone, can wait for a normal booking at the lower price. For power outages without a downed line, Oncor takes reports at 888-313-4747.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Dallas?

No permit is needed to remove trees from a single-family or duplex lot under 2 acres in a residential district, as long as a house is already on it, the City of Dallas Landscape and Tree Manual says. Other single-family and duplex properties, and vacant lots, need a tree removal application or a building permit before trees come down, except in an emergency.

Two exceptions catch people. Properties inside a Neighborhood Forest Overlay are subject to permit, and designated Historic Trees are restricted from removal. If you are building or demolishing, the manual requires a tree survey and a tree protection plan approved by the city arborist for trees you keep.

Parkway trees, clearances and your neighbor's tree

Dallas owners maintain the trees on their premises, including the parkway and out to the center of the alley, but parkway trees are city property and cannot be removed without city arborist approval, the manual says. You must keep branches trimmed to 8 feet over sidewalks and 15 feet over streets and alleys.

A tree on the property line should come down only after you talk to the neighbor; the city does not step into civil disputes between owners. If the tree is your neighbor's and it fell on your house, Consumer Reports says the claim usually goes through your own insurer.

Tree trimming in Dallas: cost and clearance work

Tree trimming costs $400 to $900 per tree on average nationally, with a $650 average, HomeGuide reported in January 2026; Fixr's range is $175 to $750. Clearance pruning to meet the 8 and 15 foot rules is usually raising: removing lower branches, which ISA lists as a standard pruning type. Ask the crew not to take more than 25% of the crown in one visit, the ISA limit for mature trees. See tree trimming for prices by height.
