Emergency Tree Removal Cost: $450 to $5,000 (Fixr)

Emergency tree removal costs $450 to $5,000 in Fixr's tree removal guide, often 2 to 3 times the normal rate, and Angi's July 2026 data also says emergency removal can reach $5,000.

Typical price range$450 to $5,000

A tree that fell in the open is cheaper: Fixr's storm guide prices fallen tree removal at $400 to $900. If a tree touches a power line, stay back and call 911 and the electric utility before anyone cuts.

Is it an emergency? Fallen and leaning trees ranked by danger

  • Call 911 now: a tree or limb is on a power line, a wire is down, someone is hurt or trapped, or the tree has broken into the house. If it hit the house, photograph it before anything is moved, call your insurer, and never sign over the claim. Oncor tells customers to leave the area and call 911 for a downed line, and Seattle City Light says to stay at least 30 feet away.
  • Same day: a tree blocks your only way in or out, sits on a car, shed or fence, or hangs in another tree. Broken limbs and uprooted trees under tension can move unexpectedly when cut, the ISA warns, so leave them for a crew.
  • Within a day or two: a tree is newly leaning toward the house and the soil at its base is cracked or lifting. The ISA says that combination can signal root movement.
  • Can wait for a normal booking: a tree came down in an open part of the yard and touched nothing. Photograph it anyway; it is usually much cheaper at a normal rate.
Definition

Emergency tree removal is cutting and clearing a fallen, hanging or dangerously leaning tree on short notice, usually after a storm; Fixr prices it at $450 to $5,000, often 2 to 3 times the normal rate.

Tree on a power line: stay back and call the utility

A tree on a wire is the utility's job first, and nobody should touch the tree until the line is dead. FPL says to treat every wire as energized and to stay far away from a downed line, and OSHA's storm cleanup guidance says to assume lines are energized until proven otherwise. Oncor says never to approach, touch or try to move a downed line; call 911 and the operator contacts the utility. Oncor also says to keep children and pets clear.

Once the utility has cut the power or cleared the line, a tree crew can work. OSHA says to keep at least 10 feet from overhead lines unless they are de-energized and grounded, and FPL tells customers to keep ladders and tools at least 10 feet from neighborhood lines and 30 feet from all other lines. Ask the tree service on the phone whether it waits for the utility or works near lines itself; Angi says large trees near power lines can cost upward of $10,000.

Fallen tree removal cost: emergency vs normal pricing

Emergency pricing is a premium on top of the same job, not a different price list. Fixr says emergency removal costs $450 to $5,000 and can be 2 to 3 times the normal rate, and HomeGuide says the same 2 to 3 times for same-day or next-day work. Angi adds 25% to 50% for unsafe or hard-to-reach trees. A tree that already fell is often easier than one standing: HomeGuide says a cleanly fallen tree in an open area usually costs less to remove than a standing tree.

Fallen tree removal cost by situation. Angi (Jul 2026), Fixr (Jan 2025), HomeGuide (Feb 2026).

Three things push a storm bill up. Access: a tree wedged between the house and a fence may need rigging or a crane, which Fixr prices at $1,500 to $2,500 for a crane-assisted removal. Condition: Fixr gives health and condition, and obstacles and accessibility, 15% each of its price factors. Timing: HomeGuide says prices run 10% to 20% higher in summer and fall. If several trees came down, ask for one price for all of them. For standing trees that are not an emergency, tree removal prices by height apply, and stump removal is usually a separate line.

Tree blocking the road, driveway or sidewalk: who removes it?

Where the tree landed decides who clears it. A tree across a public street is usually the city's, while a tree across your driveway is yours, even if it fell from the street side.

  • Public street or alley. Dallas tells residents to report a fallen or hazardous tree in the street to 311 or Public Works at (214) 670-4491, and to call 911 for a life-safety emergency. Philadelphia says to call 911 for a fallen-tree emergency. Chicago's Bureau of Forestry crews respond to tree emergencies in the public way at all hours. Check your own city's 311 or public works line.
  • Your driveway or yard. On private land the owner hires the crew. The Texas Department of Insurance says many homeowners policies provide some coverage when a tree falls in a storm, and its column lists a tree blocking the driveway among its examples, but limbs and trees that fall in the yard usually are not covered.
  • Street trees in front of your house. Rules differ. Philadelphia says street trees are owned by the property owner while the city removes hazardous ones for free; Dallas treats parkway trees as city property that needs a city arborist's approval to remove. Ask before you pay a crew to cut one.

Fallen tree on a fence, car or shed: who pays?

State insurance departments in Maryland, Texas and Iowa all publish guidance on fallen trees. They agree on the big points and differ on the details, so we show each one. Your own policy, its limits and your deductible decide the answer.

On removal money, Maryland says policies may pay a limited amount, usually $500 to $1,000, and that the limit is typically per event, not per tree. Iowa says removal is typically paid up to a dollar amount defined by your policy, and that claims can be denied if a tree fell from neglect, disease or rot that was known beforehand. Fixr says the same thing in cost-guide terms: tree removal is generally covered unless the tree was in poor condition before the storm. Iowa suggests contacting your insurer if the damage looks larger than your deductible.

If the tree hit the house

Then it is a property claim before it is a tree job. Photograph the tree on the house and every damaged room before anything is moved, call your insurer and get a claim number, and never sign an assignment of benefits or any paper that hands your claim or the insurance check to a contractor. The full order of work, roof repair prices and tarping are on what to do when a tree falls on your house, and emergency roof tarp covers the same-day cover-up.

Leaning tree after a storm: hazard signs that move it up the list

A tree that leaned for years is not the same as one that started leaning last night. HomeGuide lists a lean that suddenly changed or is more than 15 degrees as a sign the tree needs an arborist's assessment, and the ISA says cracked or lifting soil at the base can signal root movement, especially when the tree leans. Look for both from a distance. Other signs from the ISA's tree risk brochure: a split trunk, since codominant stems can often be failure points, and detached branches hanging in the canopy.

If a leaning or split tree could reach the house, a driveway, a play area or a neighbor's roof, get it looked at within a day or two. If it could only fall into an empty yard, a normal booking is fine. When the risk is unclear, an ISA certified arborist can assess it; tree trimming covers cutting back hanging or cracked limbs when the whole tree does not have to go.

Chainsaw cleanup after a storm: what to leave to a crew

Cutting up small limbs on the ground is a weekend job for many owners. Trees on structures, hung trees and anything that needs a ladder are not. OSHA's chainsaw fact sheet lists heavy lean, rotted trees and cutting above shoulder height or from a ladder or tree as higher-risk work, and its storm guidance warns that the top of a dead tree can break off when cut. If you do cut:

  • Wear a hard hat, eye and hearing protection, chaps, gloves and sturdy boots (OSHA).
  • Fuel the saw at least 10 feet from any ignition source, and never work alone.
  • Do not cut directly overhead, and watch for wood under tension that can spring back.
  • Keep bystanders at least twice the tree's height away when felling, OSHA says.

Questions to ask an emergency tree service

  • What is your after-hours or emergency rate, and is the price for the whole job or by the hour?
  • Does the price include cutting, hauling and chipping, or only cutting it into pieces?
  • Will you need a crane, and what does it add?
  • Is stump grinding included or a separate line?
  • Will you give me an itemized invoice I can send to my insurer?
  • Do you have an ISA certified arborist on staff, and can I see proof of insurance? Where my city or state licenses tree work, what is your license number?
