Solar Panels on a Metal Roof: $12 to $25 a Sq Ft, 40+ Years

A metal roof under solar costs $12 to $25 per square foot installed against $5 to $10 for asphalt shingles (Solar.com, 2025), and a standing seam roof takes the panels on clamps that grip the seams with no holes.

The roof lasts 40 to 70 years (Solar.com) or 50-plus (Metal Roofing Alliance) against 25 to 30 for the panels, so it should not force a mid-life detach and reset. Corrugated and other exposed-fastener metal is different: the mounts screw through the roof and rely on sealed brackets.

Definition

Solar on a metal roof means mounting a solar array to a standing seam or exposed-fastener metal roof: with clamps that grip the seams and make no holes on standing seam, or with sealed brackets screwed through the roof into the deck or purlins on corrugated and R-panel roofs.

The Metal Roofing Alliance puts it plainly: metal roofs use clamps and accessories that attach solar "without the need for drills or holes," and a builder it quotes describes leaving "a weather tight roof in place" and clamping everything to it. That is the main reason installers and roofers like standing seam for solar. Exposed-fastener metal still works, but each mount is a penetration, and Solar.com notes those roofs need more upkeep because of the exposed screws.

Does a metal roof outlast the solar panels

Yes, by a wide margin. The Metal Roofing Alliance says a quality metal roof lasts "50-plus years, two or three times the average lifespan of other types of roofing materials," and that the roof will easily outlast panels rated for 25 to 30 years. Solar.com puts metal at 40 to 70 years. On a shingle roof, the roof often needs replacing partway through the array's life, which means paying a solar crew to take the panels off and put them back. On a metal roof installed at the same time as the array, that mid-life detach and reset should not come up.

What solar on a metal roof costs

Solar.com, which sells solar, puts metal roofing at $12 to $25 per square foot installed against $5 to $10 for asphalt shingles, or $24,000 to $50,000 for a full metal roof on a 2,000 square foot home. For the solar itself, no independent cost guide we found publishes a price difference between metal and shingle installs. The only figures come from S-5!, the clamp maker, which claims rail-less mounting on metal saves 35 to 50% on hardware and at least 30% on labor compared with rails. Treat that as a manufacturer claim, and ask any installer to show mounting hardware and labor as separate lines on the quote so you can see whether a saving was passed on.

Pros and cons of solar on metal

Detail
Pro: no new holes on standing seamClamps grip the seams, so the roof stays as weathertight as the day it went on (MRA, S-5!).
Pro: the roof outlasts the array40 to 70 years (Solar.com) or 50-plus (MRA) against 25 to 30 for panels.
Pro: weather ratingsSolar.com cites metal roofs rated for 140 mph wind, Class 4 hail and Class A fire.
Con: upfront roof cost$12 to $25 per square foot against $5 to $10 for asphalt (Solar.com).
Con: exposed-fastener roofs still need penetrationsEach mount is screwed through the roof; check them at every inspection.
Con: snow slidesMetal sheds snow fast. Solar.com recommends snow guards where snow is common.

Adding solar when the metal roof is new

The US Department of Energy and the National Roofing Contractors Association both make the same point: the roof under an array should last at least as long as the array. NRCA's 2025 white paper on PV-ready roofs recommends roofing with service lives that "match or exceed" the solar installation and involving qualified roofers and licensed electricians. A new metal roof meets that test with decades to spare, which makes the year a metal roof goes on the cheapest time to add solar.

Questions people ask

Can you put solar panels on a metal roof?

Yes. Standing seam metal is one of the easiest roofs for solar because clamps grip the seams with no holes. Corrugated and R-panel metal also works, with brackets fastened through the roof and sealed.

Do solar panels on a metal roof need holes?

Not on standing seam, where clamps attach to the seams. On corrugated or other exposed-fastener metal, each mount is fastened through the roof into the deck or purlins with a factory-sealed bracket.

How long does a metal roof last with solar panels?

40 to 70 years according to Solar.com, or 50-plus according to the Metal Roofing Alliance, which is longer than the 25 to 30 year life of the panels.

Is solar cheaper to install on a metal roof?

No independent cost guide publishes a difference. S-5!, the clamp maker, claims rail-less mounting on metal cuts hardware and labor costs. Ask the installer to itemize mounting so you can compare.

Do I need snow guards with solar on a metal roof?

Solar.com recommends them in areas with regular snow, because metal roofs and panels both shed snow quickly.

How is solar mounted on a standing seam metal roof?

With clamps that lock onto the raised seams, such as the S-5! S-5-RC, so no holes are drilled through the roof panels.
